ATLANTA – (BUSINESS WIRE) – The following is an editorial by Eric Doherty, President, Blink Science.

The CDC said people who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks indoors, but they must still test negative for COVID before boarding an international flight to the United States. Two weeks ago, eight fully immunized NY Yankees members tested positive for COVID. While the vaccines were working as promised, thirty-seven percent of their group of vaccinated travelers were infected.

The Yankees are a special case. They only learned about revolutionary infections because they tested them. However, the number of daily tests in the United States fell last week to levels not seen in more than a year. Epidemiologists predict that we dramatically underestimate infections, especially in asymptomatic and vaccinated people. Lack of testing is not the same as lack of infection.

In the United States, just over 50% of the population has been vaccinated, but just over 40% are fully vaccinated. A recent Gallup poll found that more than a billion people around the world would refuse vaccination. Vaccines alone do not guarantee safety. Data on transmission among vaccinees and protection against variants are insufficient. Also, without testing, we have no idea whether people have COVID, vaccinated or not.

COVID testing can be expensive, invasive, and time consuming. Many organizations that are still testing have moved to surveillance testing, where a portion of the population is tested at set intervals, or group testing, where an entire group has their samples tested together to reduce costs.

Businesses and schools have invested millions over the past year to keep people safe. We are in a much better position now with the availability of vaccines, more affordable and faster testing, and technology to facilitate the flow of people through facilities. Now is the time to put this behind us and reopen our workplaces and schools without precautions? No one wants to be caught off guard when a new variant arrives and spreads, unencumbered by current vaccines.

What is an acceptable risk for your organization? High absenteeism, financial loss from another shutdown, PR nightmares from your super spreader event?

The only way to make sure that no one in your facilities has COVID is to test every person, every day, whether or not they are vaccinated. Unrealistic?

At Blink Science, we work to make it possible to test anyone, anywhere with an instant, ultra-low cost saliva test and technology suite to allow people to move safely around your facility knowing that everyone is COVID-free. It’s game-changing technology with the potential to end this global pandemic and prevent the next one.

So let’s reopen your offices, sites, factories, schools – at full capacity – but do it with the knowledge that everyone you care for is safe. It’s the new normal and it’s coming soon.
