Dundee United’s MSP Michael Marra files motion congratulating Dundee on his promotion

MSP Michael Marra, who backs Dundee United, has tabled a motion in Parliament to congratulate Dundee on his promotion to the Premiership.

Marra, a Labor MSP for North East Scotland, proposed the motion a day after the Dark Blues’ dam triumph.

He said: “Parliament congratulates Dundee Football Club on their promotion to the Scottish Premiership following their play-off triumph on 24 May 2021.

“He further congratulates Tim Keyes and John Nelms as current club goalkeepers as they open a new chapter in a 128-year history, and recognizes the efforts of the coaching staff, players and every member of the club. club staff in this most challenging of seasons.

“He salutes the Dark Blue fans for their loyal support and looks forward to the return of high performance football in front of these supporters at Dens Park in the 2021-2022 season.”

James McPake’s men secured their return to the top flight after a 2-1 (4-2 agg) victory over Kilmarnock.

Longtime Tangerines supporter Marra added: “Dundee’s return to the Premiership is great news for all associates at the club and in particular for every Dundee supporter.

“It has been a really difficult season and the challenges have been even greater for clubs outside the top flight.

“They endured great uncertainty, financial worries and logistical nightmares. Football won for Dundee.

“Winning during the play-offs is incredibly difficult and it is a testament to the strength of the club to have improved over the season and to peak at the right time.”

The motion was the first that Marra tabled in Holyrood.

He said: “For a lifelong avid United fan, there are a few things I can think of that I might have preferred to have talked about – particularly on United’s birthday and the day we have lost our manager.

“However, I have a real affection for Dundee. My cousin Billy Reilly was a huge dark blue.

“The team carried his name on the tapes after his passing. I am thrilled for Billy and all my family and friends in Dundee.

“My uncle used to say ‘we’re not Glaswegian about these things’. He was right.

“Plus we’re getting the derbies – the best game in Scottish football – and the first one we’ll be looking for when the matches are published. Well done to Dundee FC. It is so deserved.
