Health Choice Offering New Therapy To Treat Trauma, Mental Health

What if there was some type of therapy that helped people cope with difficulties and they didn’t even have to talk about it?

Guernsey County Health Choices now offers eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy for people with trauma or mental health issues.

“Some of our clinical team have been trained in a new treatment modality and we look forward to bringing this specialized therapeutic approach to our community,” said Karen Wiggins, CEO of Health Choices.

Executive Director Karen Wiggins

After extensive research, EMDR has been shown to be an effective therapy for most mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and even substance use, according to Health Choices. .

EMDR works by helping the brain to heal naturally and without long, painful conversations.

Sometimes difficult memories get stuck in the brain in the form of trauma.

As a result, negative beliefs about the individuals themselves and the world around them take shape in their lives. These beliefs have a rapid impact on the functioning of individuals. Beliefs often cause sadness, worry, flashbacks, fear, anger, mistrust, obsessions, impulsiveness or numbness.

EMDR therapy identifies and processes these beliefs, establishes new, positive beliefs, and helps the brain “loosen” these memories.

“We are available to help you solve problems related to anxiety, depression, trauma and stress, pain, bereavement and loss, sexual assault, sleep disorders, victimization , adjustment issues and other difficulties, ”said Wiggins.

Guernsey Health Choices has moved to a new location at 1009 Steubenville Ave. in Cambridge.

As a non-profit organization, Health Choices has been providing addiction treatment services to Guernsey County since 1977. They also provide mental health services to people of all ages.
