How Barcelona could secure two future Santos stars after transfer row
Barcelona emerged victorious from a huge transfer spree. After a tough summer, it looks like the Spanish giants are once again attracting talent.
Los Cules have been struggling lately due to their financial issues. They have to operate within a €97m spending cap imposed by La Liga.
Barca have recovered somewhat thanks to a €525m loan from Goldman Sachs guaranteed by president Joan Laporta. This at least allows them to pay the fees for two players, but the problem remains the salary cap.

This January transfer window, they have secured the signing of top-flight forward Ferran Torres, while club legend Dani Alves’ contract has officially come into effect.
However, they still had the entry fee hurdle to overcome. So to overcome that, they let go of part of their team, including the talented Yusuf Demir. The Austrian had his loan deal terminated one game before his €8.3m mandatory release clause kicked in.
This tactic works well in Barca’s favour. Despite their struggles, they are still making great strides in the January market. And following a debacle involving Brazilian giants Santos, they will have the first chance to land two more exciting prospects going forward.
Barcelona and Santos transfer line
In 2013, Barcelona and Santos made a massive transfer deal which brought the sublime Neymar into La Liga.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Los Cules paid €7.9m for preferential purchase options on three players following the Neymar deal, including young striker Gabriel Barbosa. At the time, ‘Gabigol’ was considered one of the greatest hopes in world football.
Three years later, the Brazilian giants sold the striker to Inter Milan for a fee of around €30m. Barcelona were furious.
They complained to FIFA, which demanded that Santos pay 3 million euros. However, the Brazilian club have offered Barca first option rights to two of their most important prospects which going forward is likely to be the much better option for the Blaugrana side.
They now have call options on young Santos stars Kaiky Fernandes, 18, and Angelo, 17.
Who are Kaiky Fernandes and Angelo?
Kaiky Fernandes is a solid defender capable of taking on challenges without fear. The potential future captain has all the capabilities to cause nightmares in opposing attackers. He is almost guaranteed to secure his place as a first-team player in the future.
However, young winger Angelo is also an exciting prospect. He is fast, dynamic and extremely talented. His ability on the ball is almost unmatched in the Brazilian league. The teenage winger easily confuses defenders, and if he continues to develop at the current rate he has a very exciting future ahead of him.
Of course, Real Madrid have enjoyed great success in the Brazilian domestic market in recent seasons. Vinicius Junior has become a key player, while Rodrygo is now starting to establish himself in the first team. Barca hope there will come a time when they can activate their first option deal for two more Brazilian talents and help them develop fully at Camp Nou.
