Mental health impacts the achievement of weight loss goals

Nutritionist Bekah Dewit says depression could be a cause of difficulty losing weight.

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – If you’re trying to lose the weight that was gained during the pandemic, mental illness could hamper your goals.

Nutritionist Bekah Dewit says depression could be a cause of difficulty losing weight.

“Definitely with depression, you kind of go into those ‘fast energy’ foods because you have little or no energy to cook,” Dewit said. “Food is such a source of comfort. It releases all of those endorphins in our minds and brings that kind of relief and is more of a ‘mood lift’ for those brief moments.”

Psychotherapist Monretta Vega says anxiety is also a factor.
“There might be some fear, and that fear can turn into anxiety, and that anxiety can turn into depressing feelings and emotions. So any change in appetite, increase or decrease; any change in sleep – increased sleep or decreased sleep. Are you getting a little more irritable? Are you frustrated? “

Mental illnesses like depression or anxiety can alter our relationship with food, making goals like weight loss more difficult to achieve.

Even experts can struggle with these same issues.

“I also struggle with depression and this is one of my symptoms that I check for myself,” Dewit said. “If I eat things like chips and cookies more frequently… it’s just a way for me to check in and see how my mental health is.”

Here is some tips to help you achieve your goals while coping with mental illness:

  • Start small, set achievable goals, and continue to gradually add more goals as you go.
  • If you’re battling depression, think of food as a source of fuel and nutrition rather than an outlet.
  • Slowly eliminate unhealthy food choices from your diet, removing surgical drinks first. Start by reframing by drinking or eating the article for a few days and build from there
  • If you’re still struggling to reach your weight goals, see a dietitian and work out an eating plan that’s right for you.
