‘Squid Game’ Season 2 teased
Netflix’s ultra-popular Squid game now sees season two teased. The news comes from an interview with the director of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk. The series, which debuted on September 17, is well on its way to becoming Netflix’s biggest series debut. It is currently the most watched show on Netflix.
“Do you want to play a game with me?” “
The premise for Squid game is something akin to fall guys meets Battle Royale / The Hunger Games. 456 poor people are recruited to play a series of games. The games are simple and often based on popular children’s games like Red Light Green Light. The twist is, don’t follow the rules of the game and you’ll be knocked out (shot). Players are in dire straits with multiple or substantial debts to various organizations or individuals. Often, like the main character Seong Gi-hun, they have a crippling gambling addiction that easily leads them to play the games. For each person eliminated, a pot is considerably increased. The remaining winner (s) shared the pool which is equivalent to 45.6 billion won ($ 38.6 million).
With season two teased from Squid game, it’s almost impossible to avoid spoilers. So, for those who wish to continue reading, you have been warned.
While I was writing the first season, I thought about the stories that could be in the second season if I had to make one – one would be the Frontman story. [an ex-cop who is now one of the masterminds behind the game]. I think the problem with the police is not just a problem in Korea. I see from the world news that police forces can be very late to act – there are more victims or a situation worsens because they do not act fast enough. It was a question I wanted to raise. Maybe in season two I can talk more about that.
The first season of Squid game focuses on global financial inequality and its impact on those at the lower end of the spectrum. For anyone who has experienced financial difficulties in their life, this can be a difficult watch. But, that’s what makes it so compelling. This makes the characters and their motivations all the more believable. So potentially seeing a social commentary on the state of the police force could be just as compelling.
There was a time when there was a lot of talk about people’s reluctance to make way for ambulances on highways – people didn’t understand the role of authorities, their existence to serve the public. Squid Game expresses the hope that these issues will be resolved and improved.
If nothing else, Squid game has proven that the public craves something different. While the colorful visuals hide nightmares, they are nightmares that make audiences think. For that reason alone, I can’t wait to see season two.
