The Fiji Times » Ram specializes in computer and information systems

Sidhanth Ulash Ram became interested in the world of technology from an early age and knew that he would one day make a career out of it.

To fulfill his dream, the boy from Ba enrolled in Fiji National University (FNU) after completing his high school education from AD Patel College in Ba.

Ram chose to enroll in the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science and Information Systems) program offered by the University’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST).

He undertook his studies at the Natabua Campus in Lautoka.

“Computer science and information systems comprise various crucial components of the technological world and offer multiple career opportunities,” Ram said.

“That’s why I chose this field of study, because my interests were in the field of database administration and networking.”

“Throughout my academic studies at FNU, my overall experience as a student could be described as transformative,” Ram said.

“FNU responded to my eager enthusiasm to learn new concepts and excel in all aspects of my studies.”

“The environment, facilities and resources provided by FNU have also contributed immensely to my experience of life on campus.”

Ram said an added incentive at FNU was being taught by qualified, industry-savvy lecturers who blended theoretical and practical lessons with their own expertise.

“I believe it prepared me to successfully graduate and enter the workforce confident and skilled,” he said.

“The mandatory industry attachment component of FNU courses also gave us a good understanding of current industry needs and demands.”

In addition, Ram has also earned a Windows Server Administration Certification from FNU’s National Training and Productivity Center (NTPC). After graduating from FNU last year, Ram was employed by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) as an IT technician.

“I feel lucky to be able to work in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said. “In this role, I am primarily responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of IT systems, which includes network switch administration, server administration and user support.”

“I enjoy my current job because my superiors and the entire IT team always provide me with learning opportunities in a conducive and supportive environment.” He thanked his extended family for their motivation during his studies, as well as his peers and lecturers.

Ram was also the gold medal recipient of his class of August 2021 program.

“Time management was the key to that. It is crucial to have a balanced student life so that you can enjoy both your social and academic life,” he shared.

“Students, or anyone for that matter, should also remember that nothing really replaces hard work.”

His advice to incoming and current students is to be “an honest and innovative team player.”
